MW4 DMZ Beginner Guide
New to the mw4 dmz mode? This guide covers how to play dmz mw4 from your very first raid: entering missions, finding gear, finishing objectives, and — most importantly — getting out alive.
What you will learn
The core loop, how to start a mission, where to find resources, how to complete and extract, what you lose on death, and the first loadout to insure.
1. How DMZ works (the core loop)
DMZ is an extraction mode. You and other squads drop into a shared map. Your job is to complete faction missions and loot gear, then reach an extraction point before the match timer ends. Everything you extract is banked to your inventory. Everything you leave behind (or lose on death) is gone — unless it is insured.
Think of each raid as a self-contained run: go in with a plan, do the work, and leave with more than you brought. The players who thrive are the ones who extract consistently, not the ones who chase kills.
2. How to enter a mission
Missions come from factions (for example Legion, White Lotus, Black Mous and Crown). From the pre-match screen you select a faction and a mission tier. Some missions have prerequisites — finish the early ones first.
- Pick one mission to focus on per raid; don't over-commit.
- Read the objectives on the Missions page before you drop.
- Note the recommended route and gear so you are not under-prepared.
3. How to find resources
Loot comes from supply crates, weapon caches, Buy Stations and point-of-interest buildings. Early game, prioritize:
- A reliable weapon (or use your insured starter).
- Armor and armor plates.
- A vehicle if your objective is spread out.
- Cash to insure weapons at a Buy Station.
Use the interactive map to spot loot clusters, Buy Stations and contracts before you move.
4. How to complete missions
Most missions are objective-based: download intel, plant charges, kill a target, or transport cargo. The pattern is always the same:
- Recon the area from range before pushing in.
- Clear or avoid AI patrols methodically.
- Do the objective, then immediately rotate toward exfil.
- Extract — the objective is only "done" once you are on the heli.
5. How to extract
Exfil points appear on the map and activate on a timer. Move to a point, call the helicopter, defend the landing zone briefly, then board before the window closes. Some exfils are player-triggered and have limited seats, so call early and don't loiter.
See Locations & Exfil for approach routes to each extraction point.
6. What you lose when you die
If you die without extracting, you lose the contraband items you brought in and found during that raid — unless they are insured. Insured items return after a cooldown. Your core progress, mission unlocks and insured slots are safe. This is why disciplined extraction beats greedy looting.
7. Common beginner mistakes
Fighting everything
DMZ rewards survival, not kills. Every fight risks your whole loadout. Pick engagements.
Looting too long
The longer you stay, the more likely a squad or the timer ends your run. Set an extract plan early.
No exfil plan
Know your nearest exfil before you push deep. Wandering late-game gets you caught at the edges.
Bringing your best gun first
Insure a cheap starter. Lose the meta gun on day one and you wait on a cooldown.
Ignoring AI
AI patrols and bosses hit hard. Quiet, controlled engagements beat reckless pushes.
8. Your first recommended weapon
Insure a controllable assault rifle with an optic and recoil control. It works at close and medium range and uses common ammo, which makes resupply easy while you learn. Cheaper alternatives exist if you want to risk less on early raids — see the Weapons & Loadouts page for a starter build and a low-cost SMG option.
9. Your first raid, step by step
- Insure a starter AR and spawn into the Starting Town area.
- Grab a weapon, light armor and a vehicle.
- Complete one easy mission (e.g. loot a cache, extract).
- Call the nearest exfil and leave with your contraband.
- Repeat with a slightly harder mission next time.
Data verification note
This guide is built on the established DMZ mode design, which is stable across iterations. Specific MW4 mission names, rewards, weapon stats and point-of-interest coordinates that are not yet publicly confirmed are marked To be verified rather than guessed. Strategies, routes and loadout logic remain valid.
